Our Philosophy of Discipline
We believe that students must be treated as individuals, that education is not a one size fits all affair and for this reason it is important for a teacher to develop relationships with her students that would allow her to understand their needs, not only in the academic field but on all parts of their lives. We direct our practice of education by this philosophy. In our classroom our students can expect to be treated with respect, as well as they are expected to treat others in the same way. Discipline with Dignity helps the teacher provide the student with the tools to take responsibility for their behavior creating long lasting life skills that go beyond the classroom. It enables the teacher to motivate their students to adopt new positive behaviors through investing their time in listening, acknowledging the student's achievements and creating a more significant relationship with their students. When a teacher practices discipline with dignity, he or she defers acting on a negative behavior until the time is appropriate to administer the necessary consequences without publicly humiliating the student. The goal of this approach is not to penalize students but to create learning opportunities when faced with a negative behavior. These are the reasons why I choose to practice discipline with dignity in my classroom. Remember the first rule of our classroom: RESPECT IS NON-NEGOTIABLE!
